From the Artist

When you read through the write ups to my paintings, it’s easy to see where my inspiration comes from. It’s North Devon this, our garden that and of course some of the livestock we get around here.

I have been lucky enough to spend many years in this area and the time I have spent away only reinforces how beautiful it is to me. In a farming area, the views change constantly as different crops are planted and harvested, fields are ploughed or livestock moved around. John and I live near Kings Nympton and here these views can take in miles and miles of countryside across the succession of hills. Look closer and there are beautiful colours to be seen in the flowers, birds and trees. As an artist it is a continuing challenge to paint this to your satisfaction.

My approach is to use oils straight from the tube and mixed on the surface of the painting. I create texture with brushes, sponges and knives. I may work from photos, sketches or on site depending on the subject and the weather. I may concentrate on one aspect of a subject or even change it to suit the picture I have in my mind. The best results usually come when there has been no conscious effort or thought, the painting has evolved naturally.
